In recent years, pumpkins have become a popular crop in the market, but growers often face challenges such as excessive fruit production with low quality, reduced flowering, poor light exposure, overuse of nitrogen fertilizer, and inadequate pollination. To address these issues, proper cultivation techniques are essential. Here are some key practices to follow when planting pumpkins:
First, it's important to apply sufficient base fertilizer. Pumpkins require a lot of nutrients and water throughout their growth cycle. By providing adequate base fertilizer at the beginning, you can ensure that the plants have a steady supply of nutrients and moisture, which supports healthy development.
Second, pruning the main vine is crucial. When the main vine reaches about 2 meters in length, pinch off the growing tip to encourage the development of 3-4 side branches. This promotes better flowering and fruiting.
Third, setting up a trellis system helps improve air circulation and sunlight penetration. Once the side vines reach 2 meters, train them onto the support structure. This not only enhances light exposure but also increases the fruit set rate by more than 40%.
Fourth, preventing leggy growth is important. If the vines become too long and weak, they may produce fewer fruits. One effective method is to make a small cut 30 cm above the root and cover it with black charcoal to restrict further elongation and promote stronger growth.
Fifth, artificial pollination can significantly improve fruit set. Before the female flowers open, cover them with banana leaves to protect from rain. The next morning, collect pollen from male flowers on different plants and transfer it to the female flowers. Leave them covered for 2-3 days to ensure successful pollination.
Lastly, stem burial in the late growth stage can boost yield. As the plant matures, use the adventitious roots that form along the vine. Bury the stems in fertile soil mixed with organic matter, keeping the soil moist and around 15-25 cm deep. After 2-3 rounds of this practice, yellow waxy leaves may appear at the base. Typically, 4-6 roots should be buried to maximize results.
By following these techniques, pumpkin growers can significantly improve both the quality and quantity of their harvest.
