During the entire growth cycle of tomatoes, it is essential to apply the right amount of fertilizer according to the plant's developmental needs in order to achieve high-quality and high-yield results. The fertilization strategy includes several key stages:
At the end of the seedling stage, before transplanting, it is recommended to apply a sufficient amount of well-rotted farmyard manure per acre, along with 10 kg of urea, 10 kg of ammonium phosphate, and 40–50 kg of calcium superphosphate. Alternatively, you can use 25–50 kg of a potassium sulfate-based compound fertilizer per acre, along with 10 kg of urea for better nutrient balance.
Once the tomato seedlings have developed 5–6 leaves and are in the vigorous growth phase, check the leaf color. If the leaves appear pale, it may indicate a nutrient deficiency. In such cases, foliar feeding can be applied using solutions like a 300-times diluted urea solution, a 300-times diluted potassium dihydrogen phosphate solution, or a 0.1%–0.3% compound fertilizer solution containing potassium sulfate. This should be done once every 10 days during the growing season. Foliar sprays can also be combined with pest control treatments for added efficiency.
When the first fruit at the top reaches a diameter of 1.5–2.5 cm, it’s time for the first top-dressing. Apply approximately 15–20 kg of ammonium nitrate per mu, along with 20–30 kg of superphosphate, or 5 kg of urea and 15–20 kg of potassium sulfate compound fertilizer. Water should be applied after the fertilizer is spread on the ground.
When the second and third fruits reach a diameter of about 3 cm, perform the second and third top-dressings respectively. Use 10 kg of urea and 15–20 kg of potassium sulfate compound fertilizer per mu, following the same method as the first application.
During the full fruiting stage, you can also use foliar sprays for additional nutrition. Solutions like potassium dihydrogen phosphate, liquid manure, or superphosphate can help improve fruit color and overall quality. This technique ensures that the plants receive all necessary nutrients, leading to better yields and more flavorful tomatoes.
