Boar rearing and management

Breeding and management of sows play a crucial role in ensuring the health and productivity of the entire herd. The care of sows includes feeding during pregnancy, lactation, and post-weaning periods. Special attention should be given to nursing sows, as they require a diet rich in nutrients, proteins, minerals, and vitamins to support milk production. This is especially important in the first month after birth, as it directly affects the growth and development of piglets. Immediately after birth, piglets should be encouraged to consume colostrum, which is rich in immunoglobulins. Newborn pigs have a high absorption capacity for these antibodies, but this ability decreases rapidly after 48 hours. Colostrum provides essential passive immunity, helping piglets build resistance against diseases. In addition to nutrition, proper hygiene and environmental management are key. Sows should be kept in clean, dry pens, with regular cleaning before and after farrowing. Disinfection using solutions such as 10-20% lime water, 10% potassium permanganate, or 5-10% bleach is recommended every two weeks. Daily sweeping of the pen helps maintain a healthy living environment. Providing clean water at all times ensures that pigs can eat, sleep, and defecate in designated areas, promoting good habits. For breeding boars, maintaining their physical condition and reproductive performance is essential. Boars should be fed a balanced diet and provided with appropriate exercise to keep them in optimal health. Breeding frequency varies depending on age: young boars (1-2 years) can be bred once or twice a week, while mature boars (2-5 years) can be used up to twice daily. It's important to avoid overfeeding or underfeeding, as both can negatively affect fertility. Inbreeding should be carefully managed to prevent genetic issues. Wild boars generally have strong disease resistance and are less prone to illness. However, regular disinfection and hygiene practices are still necessary. Pens should be cleaned regularly, and disinfectants like lime water or bleach should be used to maintain a sanitary environment. During seasonal changes, special attention should be given to temperature control to protect against heat stress in summer and cold exposure in winter. Vaccination is an essential part of disease prevention. Common vaccines include the triple vaccine for swine fever, erysipelas, and porcine pulmonary disease. Pigs should receive this vaccine every six months at a dose of 2ml per head. Piglets should be vaccinated at specific ages: the edematous vaccine within 15 days, the paratyphoid vaccine at 20 days, and the triple vaccine at 30 days. Within 48-72 hours of birth, a 1.5ml intramuscular injection of vitamin B complex is recommended to support early development. To manage skin conditions, a 1%-2% trichlorfon solution mixed with 0.05% sterile ester solution can be sprayed on affected areas. Treatments like insecticides or lice killers may also be used. Prevention involves keeping the pigpen clean and dry. Wild boars can be treated for external parasites every six months by mixing insecticides into their feed for 5-7 days, excluding common repellents like avisine or ethrelen. Finally, antibiotics such as terramycin powder, tylosin, and new toxins are often added to feed to prevent and treat bacterial infections. A comprehensive approach to health management, including proper nutrition, hygiene, vaccination, and parasite control, is vital for the success of any pig farming operation.
