Wheat and peanuts are often grown together in the early stages, but wheat may struggle due to insufficient nutrients, poor root development, and weak growth. Therefore, proper management during the middle and later stages is essential to ensure a successful harvest. Here are some specific measures to follow:
First, after harvesting wheat, it's important to remove the stubble promptly and apply additional fertilizers. In general fields, you can create furrows between the ridges and apply 2500–3000 kg of organic manure per mu (667 square meters), along with 25–30 kg of ammonium bicarbonate and 30–40 kg of phosphate. For fields that are particularly deficient in potassium, add 10–15 kg of potassium sulfate per mu, and then cover the fertilizer with soil.
Second, water management should be smart and timely. After applying fertilizer, if no rain is expected, irrigation should be done immediately to avoid fertilizer burn and nutrient loss. During the flowering, pod formation, and fruiting stages, drought is a major concern. Symptoms like slight leaf wilting in the afternoon indicate water stress. Peanuts are especially sensitive to water during the flowering period, and any shortage can significantly reduce yield. Regular monitoring is crucial during this time.
Third, foliar application of fertilizer can help prevent early aging. As peanut plants grow, their ability to absorb nutrients through the roots may weaken. To maintain plant health, apply a 0.2–0.3% solution of potassium dihydrogen phosphate or a 2–3% superphosphate leaching solution as a foliar spray in August and September.
In addition, it's important to monitor and control pests such as leaf spot, aphids, thrips, and bollworms. Early detection and treatment can prevent serious damage to the crop.
By following these practices, farmers can improve the growth and yield of peanuts, making the most of the intercropping system with wheat.
