There are seven key reasons behind the small fruit production in apple orchards.
(1) Improper pruning is a major issue. Many fruit growers tend to over-prune, which leads to the removal of fruit-bearing branches. This not only reduces the current year's yield but also weakens the tree, causing it to lose its balance between growth and fruiting. The result is a cycle where the tree becomes weak, produces fewer fruits, and struggles to recover.
(2) Some growers focus only on major pruning without considering balanced fertilization. Most of them prune heavily in winter without regard for the timing or the tree’s needs. As a result, even if flower buds form, the fruits end up being small and of poor quality.
(3) The fruiting area often shifts to the outer parts of the branches, leaving the inner sections barren. High-quality apples typically grow in the middle and back of the branches, but excessive pruning encourages growth at the front while neglecting the rear, leading to uneven fruit development.
(4) Some good branches are unnecessarily removed, turning them into firewood. This not only wastes potential fruit-bearing wood but also robs the tree of essential nutrients, weakening its overall health and productivity.
(5) Growers often hesitate to remove competing branches at the top, allowing the tree canopy to grow too large and become overcrowded. This leads to poor air circulation and light penetration, resulting in lower fruit quality, dull color, and increased disease risk.
(6) There is no consistent approach to tree shaping. One year, they focus on shaping the tree, but the next year, they abandon it. Without long-term planning, the tree structure becomes chaotic, making it difficult to manage and maintain high yields.
(7) Many growers fall into a routine without learning or reflecting on their practices. They don’t analyze their successes or failures, instead blaming others and complaining rather than taking responsibility. As the old saying goes, "Knowledge is power." It’s important to reflect on one’s own management, use strengths wisely, avoid weaknesses, and focus on producing high-quality apples through continuous improvement.
