Salvia miltiorrhiza Pest Management

Salvia miltiorrhiza, commonly known as Danshen, is a popular medicinal herb, but it is susceptible to various pests and diseases. Here are some of the main issues and their control methods:

(1) Root Rot: This disease is often caused by excessive moisture. To prevent it, choose a planting site with good drainage and avoid areas with high groundwater levels. During the rainy season, ensure that ditches are cleared regularly to prevent waterlogging. In the early stages of infection, drench the roots with a 50% carbendazim solution diluted at 1:1000.

(2) Leaf Spot: This fungal disease can be managed using a Bordeaux mixture, which is prepared in a ratio of 1:1:150 (1 part copper sulfate, 1 part lime, and 150 parts water). Apply the mixture when symptoms first appear to prevent further spread.

(3) Ground Tiger (Cutworm): These pests are active at night and can damage young plants. One effective method is to manually collect them early in the morning. Alternatively, you can prepare poisoned bait by mixing 100 grams of fried rapeseed cake with 90% trichlorfon crystals and spread it in the field to attract and kill the pests.

(4) Cockroaches: These pests typically infest the crop in the fall. To control them, you can pour a diluted solution of 90% trichlorfon (at a ratio of 1:1000 to 1:1500) around the root area. Manual removal is also an option for small infestations.

(5) Root-knot Nematode Disease: This is a serious problem that affects the root system. Prevention involves crop rotation, avoiding consecutive planting of the same crop, and selecting disease-free seedlings and plots for cultivation. Healthy planting practices can significantly reduce the risk of infestation.

The harvesting period for Salvia miltiorrhiza usually lasts from late November to the end of December. When harvesting, carefully dig up the entire plant without cutting the roots. Gently shake off the soil, trim the roots, remove the top portion, and then dry the roots thoroughly. Fresh roots should be dried promptly to avoid freezing or rotting. Proper drying is essential to maintain the quality and medicinal value of the herb.
