Rabbits can feed leaves in summer and autumn

In summer and autumn, feeding rabbits with fresh leaves is a crucial strategy to ensure a steady supply of feed. Here are several commonly used leaf types that can be beneficial for rabbit farmers and small-scale breeders. These options not only provide nutrition but also help reduce feed costs. 1. **Hedgehog Leaves (Robinia pseudoacacia)** Also known as black locust leaves, these are rich in protein, calcium, and other essential nutrients. They can be fed fresh, dried, or ground into leaf powder for easier storage and use. This makes them an excellent roughage option for rabbits, especially during the warmer months when other feed sources may be limited. 2. **Amorpha fruticosa Leaves** These leaves, from the false indigo plant, are highly nutritious, containing approximately 20% protein, along with lysine, methionine, and threonine. Their nutritional value surpasses that of lotus root powder, making them a cost-effective choice. It's best to collect them starting in early June and continue through August for optimal quality. 3. **Pine Needles** Abundant and easy to gather, pine needles offer a good source of nutrition. However, they have a strong, astringent taste that some rabbits may find unappealing. To improve palatability, they can be mixed with other feeds at a ratio of around 5%. A small amount—10–20 grams per feeding—can be given to rabbits, typically at night. 4. **Apple Leaves and Branches** Apple leaves are highly suitable for rabbits and can be fed whole or crushed. The branches are also enjoyed by rabbits, who can easily strip the bark and eat it clean. During feeding, apple shoots can be cut into small pieces and placed in cages or pens. This method helps keep rabbits occupied and provides a natural source of fiber. 5. **Mulberry Leaves and Branches** Similar to apple leaves, mulberry leaves and branches are nutritious and well-liked by rabbits. The leftover mulberry leaves after silkworms have eaten them still hold high nutritional value and can be used as feed. If not used immediately, they can be stored in the shade for winter or even frozen. Frosted mulberry leaves are particularly beneficial for treating common ailments like colds, coughs, and eye irritation in rabbits. Because of their medicinal properties, they are often referred to as "Sangbao" by local farmers. In addition, during the sweet potato harvest season in autumn, many rabbit farmers feed their animals solely on sweet potato vines. However, this practice can be harmful because sweet potato vines lack vitamin E, which is essential for reproductive health in both male and female rabbits. Prolonged feeding on sweet potato vines alone may lead to reduced sperm production in males and lower conception rates in females. Therefore, it’s recommended to mix sweet potato vines with other forages, keeping the proportion around 30% to maintain balanced nutrition.
