Breeding and management of young cubs

Aberdeen, often referred to as a young pupa after weaning, is a critical phase in the life cycle of these animals. The larval rearing period typically spans from late June to the end of October, marking the time when young cubs transition from nursing to independent feeding. During this stage, successful breeding and management depend on a deep understanding of the growth patterns and developmental characteristics of young cubs. By aligning care and feeding practices with their natural rhythms, breeders can ensure healthy development, high-quality fur production, and improved economic returns. **Growth and Development Characteristics of Aberdeen and Custard** At birth, Aberdeen cubs are only 8–12 cm long and weigh between 100–150 grams. Their bodies are covered in short, black fetal hair, and they grow at an astonishing rate. Weaning occurs around 45–60 days of age, during which their weight increases more than tenfold, and their body length triples. Growth is consistent and follows a clear pattern—body weight and length increase in sync. The most rapid growth happens before 90–120 days, after which the rate slows down. By 150–180 days, their growth has largely stabilized, and they reach adult-like size and weight. **Breeding and Management of Young Cubs** The main goals during this period include ensuring survival rates, maintaining litter numbers, and achieving optimal body condition and fur quality. This not only helps produce high-quality furs but also lays the foundation for future breeding success. **(a) Nutritional Feeding** In the first two months post-weaning (ages 60–120 days), growth is at its peak. This is a crucial time to shape the overall health and size of the cubs. Providing high-quality, nutrient-dense feed is essential. A diet rich in carbohydrates and fats, such as cereals, cakes, fish, and meat by-products, supports this rapid development. Calcium, phosphorus, and other minerals should be included through sources like fresh bones or rabbit heads. Vitamin supplements are also important for overall health. Protein intake should be maintained at 40–50 grams per day. Insufficient protein can severely hinder growth, and even later supplementation may not fully compensate. Feeding should be done 2–3 times daily, with 30% in the morning, 20% at midday, and 50% in the evening. Allow free access to food without overfeeding. **(b) Housing and Group Management** After weaning, young cubs can be housed in small groups in cages or pens. Cages should be spaced out to reduce competition and make observation easier. **(c) Domestication and Handling** This is a prime time for acclimating young cubs to human interaction. Using food incentives, regular contact, and gentle handling can help build trust. Early domestication leads to better behavior, reduced stress, and smoother breeding processes. Some cubs can become very tame, following handlers or being handled without fear. **(d) Summer Management** With the breeding season falling in hot summer months, heatstroke prevention is vital. Regular cleaning of water containers, disinfection, and removal of waste are essential to avoid disease. Clean, dry bedding should be provided, and cages should be well-ventilated and shaded. Water should always be available, and misting the floor can help keep them cool. **(e) Post-Group Rearing** By September to October, cubs have matured enough for breeding selection. After selection, they are raised with adults. Feeding should focus on supporting growth and reproductive readiness. While the standards can be slightly lower than those for breeding adults, high-fat feeds can improve fur quality and reduce costs. Grass mats should be used for grooming, and hygiene must be maintained to prevent matting and contamination.
