Peanut leaf yellowing iron deficiency prevention during rainy season

The months of July and August in North China mark the peak season for rainfall, which coincides with the most vigorous growth phase of peanut plants. During this period, peanuts are particularly vulnerable to iron deficiency, a condition that can significantly affect their health and yield. When peanuts lack iron, the first visible symptom is chlorosis in the younger leaves, while the older leaves and their veins remain green. As the deficiency worsens, the leaf veins may turn yellow, and all new upper leaves become pale or even white, leading to brown spots, necrosis, and eventual drying of the affected areas. Compared to chlorosis caused by nitrogen or zinc deficiencies, iron deficiency is more distinct in that the leaves do not show significant size changes, but instead display clear yellowing. Nitrogen-deficient plants tend to be stunted, with thin and small leaves, while zinc deficiency often causes leaf clustering and the appearance of yellowish, lobed symptoms. To accurately diagnose iron deficiency, a simple test can be done: spray the back of the yellowed leaves with a 0.1% ferrous sulfate solution. If the leaves begin to regain their green color within 5 to 8 days, it confirms an iron deficiency. The most common treatment for iron deficiency in peanuts is foliar application of ferrous sulfate. A typical concentration is between 0.1% and 0.2%, applied every 5 to 7 days, sometimes requiring up to 3 or 4 applications. However, because peanut leaves are smooth and water-repellent, the solution may not adhere well. To improve absorption, a small amount of neutral detergent (about 0.1%) can be added to the solution, helping it stick better to the leaf surface. In addition to ferrous sulfate, there is a commercial product called "Yellow Leaf Spirit" available on the market. It contains organic chelated iron, which is more effective than traditional ferrous sulfate in correcting iron deficiency. This product is a good alternative, especially when rapid results are needed. Farmers are advised to follow the manufacturer’s instructions for best results. Proper management during this critical growth period can help prevent yield loss and ensure healthier peanut crops.
