How to Increase the Survival Rate of Transplanting Large Trees

I. Pre- and Post-Planting Management Before planting trees, it is essential to complete all the basic preparations properly. The root ball must be securely wrapped with ropes and covered with a canvas during transportation to prevent damage. The tree's roots should also be trimmed to encourage healthy regrowth. Dig a planting hole according to standard specifications, place 20 kg of base fertilizer at the bottom, and apply rooting powder to promote root development. Three small holes, each with a diameter of 50 cm, should be dug from the bottom of the pit to improve drainage in case of excessive watering. When planting, avoid burying the tree too deep, as this can lead to water accumulation and poor air circulation, which are harmful to its growth. The backfill soil must be of high quality to support the development of new roots. After planting, use three wooden stakes to secure large trees and prevent them from being blown over by strong winds. Wrap the trunk with straw ropes to protect it from sunburn and reduce water loss. For newly planted trees, it’s important to spray them once a day before 10 a.m., and keep the surrounding grass rope wet to help cool and moisturize the trunk. Once the backfill soil is compacted, water the tree thoroughly, and repeat this process three times within 7 to 10 days. After that, the tree enters normal maintenance. Monitor soil moisture by taking a sample 30 cm below the planting hole. If the soil doesn’t spread when squeezed, it needs more water. If the root ball only has minor cracks, wait 3 to 5 days and check again. Keeping detailed records and conducting regular soil tests will ensure proper watering practices. It’s important to note that trees and grass have different water requirements, especially large trees. Watering lawns is like feeding a child—small amounts, reaching 20–30 cm deep. In contrast, large trees need deep and thorough watering because their roots go much deeper. Some companies mistakenly water newly planted trees while irrigating the lawn, but this often results in insufficient water for the trees, leading to poor growth. Therefore, it’s best to manage lawns and trees separately. II. Pruning For newly planted trees, especially evergreens, pruning is crucial. Take Daguang Magnolia and Cedar as examples. Start by thinning out the foliage, removing about three-quarters of the leaves. Trim the middle of the canopy and any small, unnecessary branches to reduce water and nutrient consumption. At the same time, maintain the aesthetic appearance of the tree. Use a shading net to cover both sides facing southwest, which helps reduce evaporation and supports the tree through the hot summer months. Remove the net after September. However, over-pruning can harm the tree’s survival. I once transplanted 18 large broad-leaved magnolias, two of which had three lateral branches at the same height. To increase survival chances, I removed all three branches, causing a large wound on the trunk, which affected the tree’s growth and limited new leaf production. It’s important to seal such wounds with a rust inhibitor to prevent infection. III. Some Practical Experience For newly planted trees, it’s best to form a dedicated management team to handle tasks like watering, fertilizing, soil testing, and monitoring weather changes. Keep detailed records to ensure everything is done properly. For example, if the forecast predicts moderate to heavy rain within 35 days, I would cover the tree with old plastic sheets and remove them after the rain to avoid excessive water affecting growth. When it comes to fertilizing, whether using foliar or root-based methods, always test on a small tree first. Wait 7 to 10 days to see if there are any negative effects before applying it to larger trees. Transplanting large seedlings, especially those with a diameter above 30 cm, is challenging due to low survival rates and difficulty in rooting. To reduce risks and improve success, proper pre- and post-transplant care is essential. This includes careful handling, adequate watering, appropriate pruning, and ongoing monitoring. With these strategies, the survival rate of large trees can be significantly improved.

Nerve System

For the treatment :

[Of all the diseases of the nervous system, the most common difficulty that people have is pain, and much of that is nerve-related," according to Dr. Shai Gozani, founder and CEO of NeuroMetrix, a medical device company. [There are 100 million people who live with chronic pain."

According to the Mayo Clinic, patients with nerve disorders experience functional difficulties, which result in conditions such as:

Epilepsy, in which abnormal electrical discharges from brain cells cause seizures

Parkinson's disease, which is a progressive nerve disease that affects movement

Multiple sclerosis (MS), in which the protective lining of the nerves is attacked by the body`s immune system

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig's disease, is a motor neuron disease which weakens the muscles and progressively hampers physical function

Huntington's disease, which is an inherited condition that cause the nerve cells in the brain to degenerate

Alzheimer's disease, which covers a wide range of disorders that impacts mental functions, particularly memory.

Mayo Clinic also noted that the nervous system can also be affected by vascular disorders such as:

Stroke, which occurs when there is bleeding on the brain or the blow flow to the brain is obstructed;

Transient ischemic attack (TIA), which are mini-type strokes that last a shorter period of time but mimic stroke symptoms; and

Subarachnoid hemorrhage, which is specifically bleeding in the space between your brain and the surrounding membrane that can be the result of a trauma or rupturing of a weak blood vessel;

Infections such as meningitis, encephalitis, polio, and epidural abscess can also affect the nervous system, the NIH noted.

Treatments vary from anti inflammatory medications and pain medications such as opiates , to implanted nerve stimulators and wearable devices, Gozani said. [Many people also turn to herbal and holistic methods to reduce pain, such as acupuncture."
