How to quickly turn chicken manure and other poultry manure into high-quality organic fertilizer?
Chicken manure is considered one of the most nutrient-rich types of poultry waste. Among different birds, chickens and ducks consume a variety of feed such as insects, fish meal, grains, and grass, which makes their manure rich in organic matter, nitrogen, and phosphorus. Compared to geese and other livestock, chicken and duck manure has higher nutrient content. Although geese are herbivores and their manure has a similar nutrient profile to that of cattle or pigs, the quality of their manure is generally lower than that of chicken and duck dung.
A key component in bird feces, especially from chickens, ducks, and geese, is uric acid, which is not directly usable by plants. Therefore, fresh poultry manure can only provide about half the nitrogen value of chemical fertilizers but has great potential when properly processed. Direct application of raw poultry manure can lead to pest infestations underground, so it must be fully composted before use. Once decomposed, it becomes a premium organic fertilizer, often used as a base or top dressing for vegetables and cash crops. It not only boosts yield but also improves the overall quality of agricultural products.
To accelerate the fermentation process, you can use chicken manure combined with crop stalks or other organic materials, along with a specialized fermentation agent. With the right mix, the temperature can rise to 75°C within three days, allowing for effective sterilization, pathogen elimination, and organic matter breakdown within a week. The resulting bio-organic fertilizer contains beneficial microorganisms, is non-toxic, environmentally friendly, safe for both humans and animals, and helps break down pesticide and fertilizer residues. This leads to increased yields, improved soil health, better crop quality, and enhanced resistance to diseases.
Here’s how to do it: Start by mixing chicken manure with an appropriate amount of straw powder or other waste materials to adjust moisture levels. The ideal moisture content should be between 55% and 65%. When squeezed, the mixture should form a ball but not drip water. If it's too wet or too dry, it will hinder the fermentation process.
Next, mix rice bran (preferably fresh) with the fermentation additive in a 5:1 ratio. Rice bran provides excellent nutrition for the microbes involved in the process. This ensures efficient decomposition and faster maturation. Within three to five days, you’ll have high-quality organic fertilizer ready for use.
