Rabbit can feed leaves in summer and autumn

In summer and autumn, feeding rabbits with fresh leaves is a practical and cost-effective way to ensure adequate feed supply. Here are several commonly used leaf types that can be beneficial for rabbit farmers and small-scale breeders to consider. 1. **Hedgehog Leaves (Robinia pseudoacacia)** These leaves belong to the legume family and are highly nutritious. They can be fed fresh, dried, or processed into leaf powder. Rich in protein and calcium, they serve as an excellent roughage for rabbits. It's recommended to collect and use them abundantly during the warm seasons. 2. **Amorpha fruticosa Leaves** Harvested and dried, these leaves can be made into powder. They contain approximately 20% protein, along with essential amino acids such as lysine (1.24%), methionine (0.2%), and threonine (0.79%). Their nutritional value surpasses that of lotus root powder, and they are easy to gather at a low cost. It's best to start collecting them from early June until August. 3. **Pine Needles** Pine needles are abundant, inexpensive, and nutritionally rich. However, they have a slightly astringent taste, which may affect palatability. When feeding, it's advisable to let the doe eat them first, then offer small portions (10–20 grams) to the young rabbits. They should only be given at night. If crushed and mixed with other feeds, they can make up about 5% of the total diet. 4. **Apple Leaves and Branches** Apple leaves are highly suitable for rabbits and can be fed whole or crushed. The branches are also enjoyed by rabbits, who can easily strip the bark and eat them clean. These can be cut into small pieces and placed in the cage or hutch. Apple trees can be a sustainable source of feed throughout the year. 5. **Mulberry Leaves and Branches** Similar to apple leaves, mulberry leaves and branches are excellent for rabbit feeding. The leftover mulberry leaves after silkworms have eaten them still retain high nutritional value and can be used as rabbit feed. If not used immediately, they can be stored in shaded areas for winter or ground into powder. Frozen mulberry leaves are not only good for feeding but also have medicinal benefits. Frosted mulberry leaves are particularly effective in treating colds, coughs, and eye irritations in rabbits, especially those suffering from heatstroke. Hence, they are often referred to as "Sangbao" by local farmers. Additionally, during the sweet potato harvest season in autumn, many farmers feed their rabbits solely on sweet potato vines. This practice is not ideal, as sweet potato vines lack vitamin E, which can negatively affect male rabbit fertility and female rabbit reproduction rates over time. Therefore, when using sweet potato vines, it’s important to mix them with other forages, keeping the proportion around 30% to maintain a balanced diet.
