Orchard Ecological Management Two Models

In orchard management, maintaining either natural or artificial grass cover for a long time without frequent plowing is essential. When the vegetation reaches a height of 30 to 40 cm, it is manually or mechanically cut and left scattered under the tree canopy. Throughout the growing season, the grass regrows in cycles of 15 to 40 cm, continuing year after year. This practice significantly increases the organic matter and available mineral content in the soil, while also helping to lower the pH level. As a result, it eases soil alkalization, promotes the mineralization of organic materials, and reduces erosion. Another effective method involves integrating grass with livestock farming. By using natural or artificial grass as feed for animals such as pigs, cattle, sheep, chickens, and rabbits, the manure produced can be returned to the orchard, creating a closed-loop nutrient cycle. In Linyi, Shandong, an ecological model known as “one fruit tree and one chicken” has been successfully implemented. Similarly, in Xinjiang, the “inter-row planting, grass cultivation, and two acres of fruit trees” approach has helped address local issues like limited fertilizer availability and soil degradation. These practices not only reduce certain physiological disorders in plants but also enhance fruit quality, making them sustainable and environmentally friendly solutions for modern agriculture.
