Orchard Ecological Management Two Models

In orchard management, maintaining either natural or artificial grass for a long period without frequent plowing is essential. When the grass reaches a height of 30 to 40 cm, it is either manually or mechanically cut and scattered beneath the tree canopy. Throughout the growing season, the grass is allowed to regrow in cycles of 15 to 40 cm, creating a continuous cover. Over time, this practice significantly increases the organic matter and available minerals in the soil while gradually lowering its pH. This helps counteract soil alkalization, enhances the mineralization of organic material, and reduces erosion, leading to healthier and more sustainable orchard conditions. Another effective approach involves integrating grass with livestock farming. By using natural or artificial grass as feed for animals such as pigs, cattle, sheep, chickens, and rabbits, farmers can recycle animal manure back into the soil, closing the nutrient cycle. In Linyi, Shandong Province, an ecological model known as "one fruit tree and one chicken" has been successfully implemented. Similarly, in Xinjiang, the "inter-row planting, grass cultivation, and two acres of fruit trees" model has helped address local fertilizer shortages and soil degradation. These integrated systems not only reduce certain physiological plant disorders but also enhance fruit quality and overall farm productivity. By combining these methods, orchard owners can create a more balanced ecosystem that supports long-term sustainability, improves soil health, and boosts agricultural output. This holistic approach reflects a shift toward environmentally friendly and resource-efficient farming practices that benefit both the land and the farmer.
