Since the big move, we've been finding our groove as a family, even if it's a bit chaotic at times. In between exploring our new neighborhood and getting settled into life here, we've been soaking up everything this coastal town has to offer. It's amazing how quickly you start to feel at home when the air carries that familiar salty tang.
Just days after unpacking, we heard about the hit movie *Dolphin Tale*, which had just opened in theaters. What we didn't realize at the time was that the aquarium we'd planned to visit was not only the setting for the film but also home to its star, Winter, the incredible dolphin who lost her tail. One sunny morning, before heading to see the movie, we decided to make a detour to the Clearwater Marine Aquarium.
The actual rescue of Winter happened back in 2005, and while her story might be a bit less dramatic than the Hollywood version, it's no less inspiring. She lost her tail fin after getting tangled in a crab trap line, but thanks to the dedicated team at the aquarium, she's thriving. Winter is such a mix of spunky and sweet—just like in the movie—and seeing her up close was truly unforgettable.
One of the coolest things about the aquarium is that it's both a rehabilitation center and a sanctuary. Many of the animals there are being prepared for release back into the wild, though some, like Nicholas, will remain lifelong residents due to injuries or health issues. Nicholas is such a playful dolphin, always splashing around and putting on quite the show. Watching him interact with the trainers was fascinating, though I had to whisk my son Brayden away when Nicholas' tail soaked us all!
We also met Oscar the otter, who was just the cutest little critter, and Brayden became obsessed with the school of fish swimming around in the Nurse Shark tank. It was hard not to fall in love with all of them, especially knowing how much care and effort goes into their recovery and care.
After spending hours at the aquarium, we left feeling inspired and hopeful. We even signed up for a membership so we could come back anytime—we're already planning our next visit. If you ever find yourself near Clearwater, Florida, I highly recommend checking out the Clearwater Marine Aquarium. It's not just an attraction; it's a reminder of the beauty of nature and the power of human compassion.
As we drove home, Brayden kept talking about how much he wanted to bring Winter home with him. I think he's smitten! I can't wait to see what other adventures await us in our new hometown.
*P.S. I snapped some photos during our visit, but unfortunately, they didn't upload properly. Next time, I'll make sure to take better care of that!*
