Mulching cultivated crops can help them mature earlier, produce higher yields, and improve quality. However, in actual farming practices, most mulch films are often discarded due to improper usage. To increase the reuse rate of plastic films and reduce production costs, it is highly recommended to use the same film multiple times. The following are some effective methods for reusing plastic mulch:
One common practice is using the film for wheat and melons. This involves covering wheat with a new plastic film at the end of winter, then removing the film in mid-March of the following year and using it to cover watermelons in early April.
Another method is to reuse the plastic film for wheat and vegetables. From late November to mid-March of the next year, the film is first used for wheat, then replaced with spring vegetables. After about 10 days, summer vegetables are planted in early April, and some areas may even grow autumn vegetables. With careful handling, the same film can typically be reused up to four times.
Different crop rotation systems can also be implemented. For example:
1. Winter wheat – Cabbage – Cucumber (or tomatoes)
2. Winter wheat – Bamboo shoots – Tomato (or cucumber)
3. Winter wheat – Fennel – Sweet pepper
4. Winter radish – Radish – Cabbage – Beans
5. Overwintering garlic – Green onion – Cowpea – Tomatoes
6. Winter spinach – Carrots – Fennel – Tomatoes
In these examples, fast-growing vegetables like radishes and fennel can be adjusted as needed. Similarly, fruit-bearing vegetables such as melons, tomatoes, and cucumbers can be interchanged depending on the season. The plastic film remains in place, and only the crops change. For instance, after planting cabbage, you can later plant sweet peppers, followed by bamboo shoots or beans in the fall, and finally cucumbers in the autumn.
The process can also start with a small arch structure. First, the wheat is covered with plastic film. Once removed, the same film can be used to build a small greenhouse for growing vegetables like kidney beans. It can also be used in a greenhouse setup for cucumbers, and after peeling off the film, tomatoes or other vegetables can be planted. This approach not only maximizes resource efficiency but also supports sustainable agricultural practices.
