This cold stress reduces root activity and impairs the plant's ability to absorb water effectively. As a result, certain parts of the fruit may develop hollow areas due to uneven water distribution. Even if the ground temperature later rises and the roots recover, the hollow sections of the fruit cannot be refilled, leading to permanent damage.
To prevent this issue, it's crucial to ensure that the irrigation water in winter greenhouses is warmed up to at least 10 degrees Celsius before use. One practical method is to store water in a corner of the greenhouse to allow it to warm naturally. This simple adjustment can help maintain healthy root function and prevent the development of hollow fruits, ensuring better-quality tomatoes throughout the growing season.
