Tiger Eye Qinghai Onion

Scientific name: Ornithogalum caudatum

Common Name: Shallot

Family: Liliaceae (Lily Family)

Category: Evergreen Grass

Morphological Characteristics:

This is a perennial evergreen grass with large bulbs, which can reach up to 10 cm in diameter. The bulbs stand upright above the soil surface, and their outer layer is covered with dry, papery scales. Inside, there are fleshy, tender green scales that are bright in color. These fleshy scales often produce numerous small bulbs. The leaves emerge from the bulb, are long and narrow, almost fleshy in texture, with a cylindrical tip that is slightly tapered. Fully grown leaves can reach over 1 meter in length. The flower stalks can grow up to 50–80 cm tall, bearing many small white flowers, each about 1 cm in size, with a single green stripe on each petal. The seeds are black. It typically blooms from March to May, and sometimes even in autumn. The fruiting period occurs between May and July.

Origin and Distribution:

Native to South Africa, this plant has been widely cultivated as a potted plant across both northern and southern China.

Growth Habits:

It prefers warm climates and can survive winter at temperatures above 5°C. It thrives in bright light but should be protected from direct sunlight during the summer. It is drought-tolerant and can withstand waterlogging. It grows best in loose, well-drained soil rich in humus.

Usage:

Tiger-eye evergreen is a traditional Chinese medicinal herb used to treat conditions such as liver cirrhosis and hepatitis. In recent years, its unique properties have attracted significant attention from scientists around the world. Research on "tiger-eye evergreen" has been frequently reported in scientific journals and has become a key focus in pharmaceutical research.

In 2003, under the support of the Department of Science and Technology of Jilin Province, Changchun Yinghua initiated a research project titled “Research and Development of New Anti-cancer Chinese Medicines.” As part of this initiative, tiger-eye evergreen was selected as the primary subject of study. Over the course of more than two years, the team focused on analyzing the active components and pharmacological effects of the plant. Through extensive research on extraction methods, they identified the total effective fraction and optimized the extraction process. Using water extraction and alcohol precipitation techniques, they achieved a polysaccharide content of over 50%, and established a controllable quality standard.

Experimental results showed that the total polysaccharides from Ornithogalum caudatum had a significant inhibitory effect on hepatoma H22 and sarcoma S180. It also increased the survival rate of mice with ascites hepatocellular carcinoma (HepA). Additionally, it improved the nervous, cardiovascular, and respiratory systems in normal experimental animals without causing significant side effects. Toxicological studies confirmed its safety.

Recently, the project successfully passed expert evaluation organized by the Science and Technology Department of Jilin Province.
