Breeding and breeding management of female rabbits during lactation

After the pups are weaned, the focus shifts to ensuring the health of the lactating female rabbit and the continued growth of her young. During this time, it's essential for caretakers to monitor the amount of milk the mother produces. On average, adult females can produce between 60 to 150 grams of milk per day, with some reaching up to 300 grams. Starting from the fifth day after birth, the feeding schedule should be adjusted based on the rabbit’s milk production—increasing both the quantity and frequency of feedings as needed.

The diet provided to lactating does should contain at least 17% crude protein and include high-quality green feeds and juicy vegetation to support milk production. Clean, fresh, and warm water must always be available. Hygiene is crucial during this period, as mastitis is a common concern. To help prevent infections, a small amount of ground sulfathiazole (around 0.15 grams) can be added to the feed or drinking water. It's also important to keep the nesting box, food bowls, and water containers clean at all times. Regular disinfection, proper ventilation, and a calm environment are key to maintaining the well-being of the mother and her offspring.

Occasionally, lactating rabbits may experience either excessive milk production or dry milk. In such cases, prompt action is necessary. If there's too much milk, reduce the amount of concentrate and green, juicy feed, and instead offer more hay and diluted salt water. If the mammary glands become overly full, applying cold compresses can help relieve discomfort. For rabbits with low milk production, consider increasing their intake of lysine-rich feeds like soybean meal or fish meal, or provide more fresh, leafy greens to boost milk quality and quantity. Monitoring the mother closely and adjusting care accordingly ensures the best outcomes for both the doe and her litter.
