**Scientific Name:** *Raphiolepis indica* (L.)
**Family:** Rosaceae
There is a Chinese proverb that says, “Spring Flowers, Noon Grass,†which symbolizes something beautiful but short-lived. In Putian, a region in Fujian Province, there is a traditional custom associated with the Dragon Boat Festival. On this day, people gather various herbs and cook them into a fragrant soup for bathing. It is believed that once the herbs lose their potency, they are no longer useful—just like the fleeting nature of spring flowers.
In local folklore, "Spring Blossoms" refer to paper flowers made from red paper, often used during festivals and celebrations. These flowers are temporary, just like the blossoms they represent. One such tradition involves newlywed women in ancient times. When a bride entered her husband’s home, she was covered by a special cloth called the "new wife cover." The bridegroom would then reveal it. During the wedding ceremony, the bride would be given a pair of scissors and a piece of red paper, asked to cut paper flowers. If she was skilled, she might create plum or peach blossoms, which were considered auspicious. If not, it could bring embarrassment, as it was seen as a sign of poor upbringing or lack of talent.
To prevent such situations, families taught young girls how to cut paper flowers as part of their daily training. These paper flowers had many uses: they were placed on food dishes during sacrifices, used as decorations for gifts, and even featured in weddings and birthdays. They often included symbols of good fortune, such as “Hundred Years of Happiness†or “Longevity and Prosperity.†Some designs also incorporated poetic phrases, like “Fu Rudonghai†or “Shoubi Nanshan.â€
The size and style of these "spring flowers" varied depending on the occasion. For instance, when a new daughter-in-law arrived at her husband's home, her mother would prepare a tea and fruit plate known as a "flower basket," which always included a flower plate, scissors, and a small book of paper flowers. These books contained the bride’s creations, showcasing her artistic skills.
While the custom of making and giving paper flowers was once widespread, especially in weddings and birthdays, it has gradually declined with modernization. Today, many people simply give food gifts, sometimes attaching a red paper flower as a symbolic replacement. However, in Putian, the tradition still lives on, with vendors selling various types of paper flowers for festive occasions.
**Appreciation of Spring Flowers:**
Spring flowers are among the most vibrant and passionate symbols of beauty in nature. Although they bloom only in spring, their journey begins beneath harsh conditions—frozen ground, dry branches, and snow-covered landscapes. Each tiny blossom is a testament to resilience, a celebration of life rising against adversity.
In northern regions, spring arrives later. By March, the earth is still cold, and the hills remain bare. Snow lingers, refusing to retreat. Yet, beneath this quiet stillness, spring flowers are quietly gathering strength, waiting for the right moment to burst forth.
By April, a few warm days and gentle breezes awaken the buds. Soon, entire trees are transformed into bursts of color—peach blossoms in pink, pear blossoms in white, apricot blossoms glowing like clouds at sunset. Cherry blossoms, delicate and abundant, fill the air with a soft, tender grace.
Amidst the greenery, wildflowers bloom in shades of purple, blue, white, and red. They line roadsides, fields, and fences, creating a colorful tapestry that captivates the heart. Every flower seems to sing its own song, inviting admiration and joy.
Even ancient magnolia trees, standing tall and proud for centuries, surprise everyone by blooming in full glory. Their massive petals resemble snow and jade, exuding a sweet fragrance that fills the air. It's as if time itself pauses to admire their beauty.
These spring flowers have a unique character—they bloom quickly and vanish just as fast. Watching them flourish and then disappear is both heartbreaking and beautiful. They remind us that beauty is fleeting, yet every moment is worth cherishing.
I deeply respect the life of spring flowers. When they bloom, they do so passionately, showing their true essence. When they fade, they do so peacefully, without regret. They understand their place in the cycle of life, ensuring that their beauty does not overshadow the future growth of fruits and seeds.
In their brief existence, spring flowers carry deep meaning. They teach us to appreciate the present, to embrace change, and to find beauty in every moment.
