Selection, use and maintenance of rotary cultivator

1. Purchase Considerations

(1) The equipment should be practical and efficient. The power consumption of the rotary cultivator must be lower than the output power of the matching tractor. The working width of the cultivator should cover both sides of the tractor’s wheels, and for three-point suspension models, it should not significantly affect the weight distribution on the front and rear wheels of the tractor.

(2) Safety is a top priority. All rotating parts of the rotary cultivator must be enclosed with a sturdy safety shield. When placed on the ground, the machine should remain stable without external support. It should also have clear warning signs and complete user manuals that include technical specifications, safety instructions, proper assembly, operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting guidance.

(3) It should meet local agricultural needs. The tillage depth should be sufficient to meet crop growth requirements, typically at least 10 cm for general use.

(4) Good after-sales service is essential. The seller should offer repair services and spare parts. The product should come with a "three guarantees" service card, ensuring compliance with the regulations on agricultural machinery repair, replacement, and return policies.

(5) Preferably choose a rotary cultivator that has obtained the Agricultural Machinery Promotion Permit from the Ministry of Agriculture and is labeled with the corresponding certificate.

2. Usage Precautions

Rotary cultivators operate with high-speed rotating parts, making safety a critical concern. Follow these guidelines when using one:

(1) Before use, inspect all components, especially checking if the rotary knives are properly installed and the bolts are tight. Ensure the universal joint lock pin is secure. If any issues are found, fix them before operating.

(2) Before starting the tractor, set the cultivator clutch to the disengaged position.

(3) Once the tractor reaches the desired speed, slowly lower the rotary cultivator into the soil. Never start the machine while the blades are in the ground, as this can damage the blades and other components. Avoid rapidly lowering the tool into the soil.

(4) Do not lift the cultivator while turning or when power is still engaged. Keep the universal joint angle below 30 degrees and reduce engine speed accordingly. When moving between fields or traveling long distances, turn off the power and lock the cultivator in the highest position.

(5) Never approach the rotating parts while the machine is running. No one should stand behind the cultivator, as flying debris could cause serious injury.

(6) Always disconnect the power before inspecting or replacing parts like blades. Turn off the tractor when making such changes.

(7) Maintain a safe speed during operation—ideally 2–3 km/h on dry land and 5–7 km/h on previously tilled or plowed ground. Avoid excessive speed to prevent overloading the tractor and damaging the PTO shaft.

(8) Ensure the tractor's wheels move over uncultivated areas to avoid compacting the soil. Adjust the wheelbase so the wheels are within the working range of the cultivator. Be mindful of your walking path to avoid double-tilling or compacting the same area.

(9) If the cutter shaft becomes wrapped with too much grass or vegetation, stop the machine and clean it immediately to avoid increasing the load on the implement.

(10) Never allow the tractor and the suspended parts to rotate simultaneously, as this can lead to accidental injuries.

(11) When using a walking tractor with a rotary cultivator, hang the tool only when the auxiliary shift lever is in the “slow” position. To reverse, place the sub-gear lever in neutral first. Avoid using the steering clutch to adjust direction while working. When turning, reduce throttle, hold the handle, and then engage the clutch to avoid damaging the machine.

3. Maintenance Guidelines

Rotary cultivator maintenance includes daily and seasonal checks. After each work session, perform basic maintenance: check and tighten all bolts, inspect for wear or damage, and ensure oil levels in the drive system, bearings, and other components are adequate. Replace any damaged parts as needed.

Seasonal maintenance should be done at the end of each farming season: thoroughly clean the machine, replace oil and grease, check blade wear and replace if necessary, inspect for deformation in hoods and frames, and restore or replace damaged parts. Paint exposed metal surfaces and apply lubricant to the shafts. If the cultivator will not be used for an extended period, store it on the ground rather than hanging it on the tractor.
