Selection, use and maintenance of rotary cultivator

1. Purchase Considerations

(1) The support system must be practical and efficient. The power consumption of the rotary cultivator should be lower than the output power of the matching tractor. The working width of the cultivator should cover both sides of the tractor’s wheels, ensuring that a three-point suspension type does not negatively affect the weight distribution on the front and rear wheels of the tractor.

(2) Safety and reliability are essential. All rotating parts of the cultivator must be equipped with sturdy safety guards. When placed independently, the cultivator should remain stable without external force and should not tip over. It is recommended to have clear safety warning signs with complete information. Instructions should include technical specifications, safety precautions, proper assembly, operation guidelines, adjustment methods, maintenance procedures, and troubleshooting solutions.

(3) The machine should meet local agricultural needs. The tillage depth should be sufficient to meet crop growth requirements, typically not less than 10 cm for general use.

(4) A reliable after-sales service is crucial. The seller should provide repair services, spare parts, and a “three guarantees” policy in line with the regulations set by the Ministry of Agriculture.

(5) Preferably, choose a rotary cultivator that has been approved by the Ministry of Agriculture and bears the corresponding certification.

2. Usage Precautions

Rotary cultivators operate at high speeds, and most safety issues are related to this. Therefore, it's important to follow these guidelines when using them:

(1) Before use, inspect all components, especially checking if the rotary knife is correctly installed, the bolts are secure, and the universal joint lock pin is functioning properly. If any problems are found, fix them before starting.

(2) Before starting the tractor, ensure the cultivator clutch is disengaged.

(3) Once the tractor reaches the desired speed, slowly lower the cultivator into the soil. Never start the blades while they are in contact with the ground, as this can damage the blade and other parts. Avoid rapidly lowering the cultivator.

(4) Do not lift the cultivator while turning. The universal joint angle should not exceed 30 degrees, and engine speed should be adjusted accordingly. When moving the machine or traveling long distances, turn off the power and lock the cultivator in the highest position.

(5) Never approach the rotating parts during operation. No one should stand behind the cultivator, as flying debris could cause injury.

(6) Always disconnect the power before inspecting or replacing parts such as blades. Ensure the tractor is turned off when making adjustments.

(7) During farming, the speed should be maintained between 2–3 km/h on dry land, and 5–7 km/h on previously tilled or plowed fields. Avoid excessive speed to prevent overloading the tractor and damaging the PTO shaft.

(8) The tractor wheels should move on unworked land to avoid compacting the cultivated area. Adjust the wheelbase so that the wheels are within the working range of the cultivator. Be careful with your movement to prevent the tractor from compacting the same area twice.

(9) If the cutter shaft becomes wrapped with too much grass, stop the machine immediately and clean it to avoid increasing the load on the implement.

(10) Never rotate the tractor and the suspended parts together, as this could lead to accidental injuries.

(11) Only hang the cultivator when the auxiliary shift lever is in the “slow” position. To reverse, place the sub-gear lever in neutral first. Avoid using the steering clutch to adjust direction during turns. Slow down, hold the handle, and then engage the clutch carefully to prevent damage to the components.

3. Maintenance Guidelines

Regular maintenance is essential for the longevity and performance of the rotary cultivator. It includes daily and quarterly maintenance. After each work session, perform daily checks: tighten all connecting bolts, inspect for wear or damage, replace missing parts like pins, and check oil levels in the drive system. Top up if necessary.

Quarterly maintenance should be done at the end of each season: thoroughly clean the machine, replace all oil and grease, inspect blades for excessive wear and replace if needed, check for deformation in the hood and frame, and restore or replace as necessary. Paint exposed metal parts and apply lubricant to the shafts. If the machine will not be used for an extended period, place the wheeled tractor-mounted cultivator on the ground rather than hanging it on the tractor.
