Lawn pruning technology

The purpose of lawn trimming is to keep the lawn tidy, beautiful, and give full play to the turf function of the lawn. Trimming the turfgrass with moderate stimulation can inhibit its upward growth, promote the density of shoots, and also help to improve the air and light transmittance of the grass layer, so that the turfgrass grows healthily. Therefore, mowing the lawn is the core of turf maintenance management. Choosing seed quality seeds from China, the lawn has obvious dwarfing characteristics.

First, the pruning principle generally follows the "1/3" principle, that is, for each pruning, the cut portion is 1/3 of the vertical height of the turfgrass. If too much trimming occurs, the ability of photosynthesis of turfgrass will be weakened due to a large loss of leaf area, and most of the existing carbohydrates will be used to form new young tissues, resulting in a lack of sufficient nutrients for the roots to sustain a large number of deaths. The result is a degradation of the lawn.

Second, the trim height of the trim height of the lawn, also known as stubble height, refers to the vertical height of the shoots measured on the lawn immediately after pruning. The ability of different types of turfgrass to tolerate pruning is different. Therefore, the suitable stubble height of turfgrass should be determined according to the physiology, morphological characteristics and purpose of use of turfgrass, in order to not affect the normal growth and development of turfgrass and its function. Generally, turfgrass has a stubble height of 3 to 4 cm. Partial shading and damage to more severe lawns should be higher. Usually, when the turfgrass grows to 6 cm, it should be trimmed. Newly sown lawns are usually trimmed for the first time when they grow to a height of 7 cm. It is very important to determine the appropriate trim height, which is the basis for the lawn trimming operation.

Third, the pruning period and the number of times the pruning of the lawn is related to the turfgrass fertility. Generally speaking, lawn pruning starts in March and finally in October, usually in sunny weather. The frequency of pruning depends on a variety of factors, such as the type of grass, the quality of the grass, the weather, the soil fertility, and the growth of the lawn in a year. In seasons with appropriate temperatures and abundant rainfall, the cold-season turf needs to be trimmed twice a week, and under normal weather conditions, it can be pruned once a week. In summer, the warm-season turfgrass needs to be trimmed frequently, but in other seasons due to the lower temperature, the turfgrass growth slows down, and the interval days must be appropriately increased. Large amounts of fertilized and irrigated lawns grow faster than normal turf and therefore require frequent trimming. Some fast-growing turfgrasses, such as false grasses and fescue, have relatively high pruning frequency.

Fourth, pruning technical points:

a. Pruning must follow the “1/3” principle. If the lawn grows too high due to poor management, it should be trimmed to the height of the stubble, but not to a standard height. Otherwise, the vegetative organs on the upper part of the lawn will be lost too much, resulting in weakened photosynthetic capacity, excessive loss of stored nutrients, making the lawn yellow, weaken or even die.

b. The blades of the pruning machine must be sharp to prevent the blades of the lawn from becoming tangled due to blunt blades. If the weather is particularly hot, the turf landscape will become white. At the same time, it is easy to infect the wound and cause lawn diseases.

c. On the same lawn, avoid pruning each time in the same direction. Change direction each time to prevent repeated pruning in the same direction multiple times in the same place. Otherwise, the turfgrass will tend to degenerate, making the lawn unbalanced.

d. Trimmed grass clippings must be cleaned, especially when the turfgrass has high humidity. Because the grass clippings left behind are conducive to the breeding of weeds, it is easy to cause infection and epidemic of diseases and insect pests, and it is also easy to make lawns obstructed and prematurely degenerate.

e. Pruning should be performed after the dew has subsided, usually without watering on the afternoon of pruning. After pruning, water should be applied at intervals of 2 to 3 hours to prevent the spread of disease.

f. It is best to sterilize the blade before trimming, especially in the July-August disease season.

g. Avoid trimming at high temperatures at noon.
