Estradiol Function:
Estradiol (E2 or 17β -estradiol) (also oestradiol) is a sex hormone.
Estradiol is the predominant sex hormone present in females. It is also present in males,

In females it is only produced 3 out of 30 days of the cycle. It represents the major estrogen in humans.
Estradiol has not only a critical impact on reproductive and sexual functioning, but also affects other organs including the bones.
Estrogens direct the development of the female genotype in embryogenesis and at puberty. Estradiol isÂ
the major estrogen secreted by the premenopausal ovary. Estradiol benzoate is an estradiol analogÂ
which contains a benzyl ester at the C-3 position and is often used in combination with a progestin toÂ
induce estrus in domestic livestock. This compound binds to the human and murine estrogen receptorÂ
α (ERα), and chicken ER with IC50 values in the range of 22-28 nM. This reflects a 6-10 fold reductionÂ
in binding affinity compared to estradiol.
Estradiol Applications:
Estradiol  is used in form of an ethanolic solution for topical application on the scalp. Similarly to other drugs against alopecia, topical or oral, it has to be applied continuously to prevent further hair loss.Regrowth of hair that was already lost is only possible to a limited extent. In general, advanced alopecia does not respond well to medical treatment, which is thought to be a consequence of the hair roots being lost.
As a sex hormone, it also triggers many of the developments of the reproductive system that begin in puberty. It is present throughout the reproductive years, and declines during and after menopause. This decline is precisely what causes many of the symptoms of menopause, such as hot flashes and night sweats, vaginal dryness, and the loss of bone mass that may lead to osteoporosis.
