Scientists at the Dresden-Rosendorf Research Center and ROTOP Pharmaceuticals in Germany are currently investigating a precise radiotherapy for the injection of radioactive microparticles into the lesions, which can kill cancer cells without damaging the surrounding healthy tissue.
Researchers have developed albumin microparticles that can carry radioactive substances into the body. The scientists also selected two radioisotopes suitable for this type of radiotherapy: é’‡90 and é•¥177. A major challenge for researchers is to enable the selected radioactive material to bind absolutely stably to the carrier molecule in order to achieve precise administration around the cancer cells. At present, they have used the radioisotope é’‡86 to perform radiotherapy tests on animals, and they have achieved gratifying results. Next, they will use é’‡90 and é•¥177 for animal experiments.
At present, ROTOP has been able to produce albumin microparticles for clinical trials. Scientists are investigating the extent to which albumin is suitable as a carrier particle for radiation therapy. After making a breakthrough in this area, it will be possible to directly inject radioactive microparticles into the liver with a catheter to accurately kill cancer cells with high doses of radiopharmaceuticals at the lesion.
