Soil hardness tester analyzes the effect of soil bulk density on dry weight of roots under drought

Effect of soil bulk density on root dry weight

Soil bulk density increases, soil hardness also increases, and soil hardness is expressed by soil mechanical resistance. Soil bulk density affects plant growth in the form of mechanical resistance. The effect of soil mechanical resistance on plant growth is first manifested in the effects on root growth. The results of soil mechanical resistance on root growth are consistent. That is, the root elongation rate is slower and the root becomes shorter and thicker in compacted soil. The determination of soil hardness can be quickly determined by soil hardness tester.

The soil was compacted to a bulk density of 1.20 g·cm-3, 1.33 g·cm-3 and 1.45 g·cm-3, respectively. The soil bulk density is divided into 4 treatments: low bulk density 1.2 (1.20 g·cm-3 on both sides of the iron barrel); medium volume weight 1.33 (1.33 g·cm-3 on both sides of the iron barrel); high bulk density 1.45 (both sides of the iron barrel) 1.45 g·cm -3 ) and mixed bulk density (1.20 g·cm -3 on one side and 1.45 g·cm -3 on the other side), the bulk density can be determined by soil hardness tester

Under drought treatment, the dry weight of roots decreased significantly with the increase of bulk density. The dry weight of D1.45 roots decreased by 37% compared with D1.2, indicating that the high bulk soil inhibited the growth of roots; the mixed bulk Dmix roots showed obvious growth. The slope of the low bulk soil is 45%, and the dry weight of the two sides differs by 45%. The dry weight of the root in 1.20 g/cm3 exceeds the half of the soil in D1.20 (120% of the average of D1.20). Under wet treatment, The difference in total weight of roots with different bulk density is much smaller. The dry weight of W1.45 roots is only 14% lower than W1.20. The dry weight of roots in Wmix is 31%, and the soil weight is 1.20 g·cm-3. The dry weight in the soil also exceeds the amount in the half of the W1.20 soil (113% of the average around W1.20). It indicates that under high soil water content, root growth is also inclined to low bulk soil.
