Oriental Lily "leaf burning" has a coup

Among the many growers of oriental lilies, the problem of “leaf burning” has always been a problem that has plagued them. In particular, growers who cultivate varieties such as 'star gazer' and 'acapulco' have been particularly severe. The author engaged in oriental lilies cultivation work for many years at the Shanghai Horticultural Training Demonstration Center of the Ministry of Agriculture of China and the Netherlands and accumulated some experience. He also conducted some research on Lily's "leaf burn" problem and gained some valuable experience. At present, it is the peak period of oriental lily production. The author believes that it is necessary to provide these experiences and experiences to the large number of lily growers and hopes to provide some help for lily production. "Leaf burning" shows that lily "leaf burning" occurs when no flower buds are seen with the naked eye. First, the young leaves curl slightly inwards, and after a few days yellow-green to white spots appear on the leaves. If the "leaf burn" is lighter, the plants can also grow normally. If the "leaf burning" is serious, the white spots can turn brown, where the damage occurs and the leaves bend. In severe cases, all the leaves and buds will fall off and the plants will stop growing. This is called "top firing". "Leaf burning" causes physiological causes "leaf burning" occurs when the balance between water absorption and evaporation is destroyed. This is the result of lack of water or transpiration caused by the lack of calcium in young leaf cells, cells are damaged and die. The rapid changes in relative humidity in the general greenhouse and the poor root development can occur. Higher soil salt content and faster plant growth relative to the root system can also have an impact. The influence of light is generally believed to be that sudden changes in the weather, such as a sudden turn of rain after a long and rainy day, will directly lead to the occurrence of "leaf burning." In fact, before the rapid changes in the weather, the plants have already caused some physical damage due to lack of calcium, and the weather changes only accelerate the occurrence of this phenomenon. Relative Humidity Influencing the relative humidity during the growth process reduces the transpiration of the plant, reduces the calcium transfer, and leads to calcium deficiency in the plant. Variety differences Some varieties, such as 'star gazer', 'acapulco', 'tahiti', etc., are sensitive species and prone to "leaf burning". Large size ball bulbs (16/18 or more) are more likely to produce "leaf burning" than small bulbs. Prevention and control methods to ensure that plants can maintain a stable transpiration In sunny, dry weather, take shade, water spray and other ways to achieve the effect of cooling, humidification. In the case of rainy days, the use of circulating fan ventilation increases air circulation and increases plant transpiration. In the time when the oriental lily has increased sensitivity to the external environment, to avoid significant changes in temperature and relative humidity in the greenhouse, the relative humidity should be maintained at about 75%. Box-type cultivation is to prevent the plant from growing too fast. During the first 6 weeks of growth, the temperature is maintained at 13°C-15°C. It is recommended to use box-type cultivation and use the rooting room. Increasing the illumination of lilies cultivated in winter or early spring, lack of light will increase the possibility of "leaf burning", and artificial light can be applied conditionally to help increase the transpiration of plants and reduce the occurrence of "leaf burning". Keep dry to avoid prolonged accumulation of water on the plants. Do not use top spraying as much as possible to keep the plants and greenhouse dry. The application of calcium fertilizers such as calcium nitrate can be performed by means of root fertilization or foliar fertilization, but the correct growth phase should be selected to ensure that each new leaf absorbs enough calcium before calcium deficiency occurs. However, it should be noted that if the method is incorrect, it may lead to negative effects. Choosing the right variety to use is not sensitive to “leaf burning”. If it is impossible to avoid it, try to use small-size bulbs. Planting methods Planting bulbs with good root system should be suitable for planting. The depth of planting should be appropriate. There should be 8-10cm soil layers above the bulbs.
